PTSA Reflections Art Program 2018

The National PTA Reflections program encourages students in Preschool through Grade 12 to create and submit original works of art in the medium of their choice— dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts — reflecting on a specific theme. This year the theme of the Reflections competition is, "Within Reach."

Every student is recognized for their accomplishments with the opportunity for state and national awards. If your child has a passion for the arts, this is a wonderful way to express their unique creativity! Entries are due November 21, 2017.

This is your child's chance to express who they are as an individual through one or more of the following:

What is the PTA Reflections Art Program?

In short, it is a recognition program designed to encourage students to explore the arts. All ages and abilities are encouraged to apply.

My child is interested, how can I help them get started?

For younger students, the concept of a theme is a foreign one. Parents may have to explain what a theme is. Essentially, a theme is an underlying message or the big idea of a story. It is a message that can be applied in their own life.

Try this Reflections Activity:
With your child, write a list of words and draw pictures of as many things that you think of that relate to the theme.

Looking for more information or need help getting started?

Visit the online student resource center.

What's the deadline? The deadline for Hampstead entries is November 21, 2017.

Where can I get an entry form? And how do I submit a finished project?

The entry form is downloadable here: PTA Reflections Entry Form. Please note that an individual entry form is required for each entry. An artist statement MUST accompany each entry. In your artist statement, tell us about your work and what it means to you.

How does your work relate to the theme?
What is your personal connection to the theme?
What did you use to create your work (e.g. supplies, technology, instrumentation, props, etc.)?
What/Who was your inspiration?

The art teachers at HCS (Mr. Terrile) and HMS (Mrs. Downey) will be collecting entries. They will also be able to answer questions about the program.

What are the Guidelines and Rules?

Read the official Rules. 2017/18 Rules Packet. As in previous years, there are size restrictions and other rules that must be followed. Works are to be 100% original and designed specifically for the program. Additional questions can be emailed to reflections@hampsteadptsa.org.

What happens after the entries are submitted?
They will be evaluated and judged by a panel of arts professionals, and winners in each category will be selected. Submissions will be reviewed by arts category and division. All judging is done in "blind" fashion, where reviewers do not see student information. They will rely on the title of the work, artist statement and piece of art to make a determination. Winners will be announced at the Celebration event. ALL participants will receive a certificate of accomplishment for their participation in the program.

When is the Celebration?
The PTA Reflections Celebration will be held on December 8th from 6pm-8pm at HCS for families of students who submitted an entry for the competition. Parents and community leaders are welcomed into the school to discover the rich culture and artistic skills presented by student artists. An art exhibit with live student performances and an awards ceremony will showcase the importance of arts education in our schools.

During the PTA Reflections Celebration, families will:
• Recognize their child’s participation and achievement in the arts.
• Discover new opportunities to stay involved in their child’s learning through the arts.
• Understand how arts programs provide necessary educational benefits and share their positive experiences with school and community leaders.

There will be snacks and light refreshments, as well as crafts and activities for the families to enjoy in addition to the planned program.

What happens after the Celebration? Student's with projects that won at the town level, will move on to be displayed at the NH State Exhibit where voting will occur again.

The NH State Reflections Exhibit will be held on March 7th, 2018 from 5:30-7:30 PM at Gilbert H. Hood Middle School located at 5 Hood Rd, Derry NH. (Snow date March 8) Entries that place during this segment of the competition will move on to the National level.

Students are recognized each year for their artistic ingenuity to bring the theme to life in a way that is personal and meaningful.

Congratulations to our students who placed in 2017! Of the 6 entries, we had 3 of them place! Pretty cool.
